I designed costumes for A Strange Loop, focusing on the contrast between Usher’s quiet, overlooked presence and the explosive, shape-shifting “Thoughts” inside his mind. Usher’s look was intentionally understated and slightly othering, built around his “Usher jacket,” custom Protect the Dolls tee, and an unusual haircut to reflect how he is often dismissed or unseen, even within his own narrative. In contrast, the Thoughts underwent extreme costume transformations using wigs, layering, and bold cultural references, shifting into ancestors, family members, and heightened archetypes, including purple choir robes and expressive color choices that pushed beyond their base neutral palette. Working with vickie washington and the design team, I used costume in conversation with Brian Pacelli’s surreal scenic design and Aaron Johansen’s lighting to emphasize the instability of identity and the intensity of Usher’s inner world.
